Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC)

Description
"The Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC) test measures the reserve capacity of transferrin, which is the portion of transferrin in the blood that is not yet bound to iron. This test helps assess the body’s iron-binding capacity and is often used alongside serum iron and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) tests to evaluate iron status."
How it works
"The Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC) test measures the amount of transferrin in the blood that is available to bind additional iron. A blood sample is drawn from a vein and analyzed in the laboratory. In the test, any iron already bound to transferrin is accounted for, and the remaining unbound sites are measured. This helps determine the blood’s capacity to carry more iron. Low UIBC values may indicate iron overload, while high values may suggest iron deficiency or increased transferrin levels."
